facilities as well as an award winning restaurant, a cozy bar, superb recreational facilities and children’s play area.
Not only is the Prince Hotel & Residence Kuala Lumpur a superb 5-star establishment, it also takes its responsibility
to help protect the environment and community very seriously. The Hotel has embarked on an ambitious programme of
efficiency measures aimed at reducing energy consumption and environmental impact. McKinnon & Clarke, an independent
energy and environmental consulting firm, has been contracted to provide this intensive analysis and assist in the Hotel’s
environmental improvements.
Nicole Tan, McKinnon & Clarke’s Senior Energy and Environmental Analyst, has been working closely with the Hotel,
learning about the Hotel’s efficiency measures. Nicole has produced an intensive carbon footprint report covering
Greenhouse Gas Reporting Scope I and II for the Hotel. Initially, all verifiable CO2 emissions data since 2005 was
calculated and used as the base-year for any future carbon accounting schemes. Nicole’s work also established
“the carbon intensity” for the Hotel as a basis for monitoring emissions performance. The carbon intensity is a measure
of the environmental performance of an organization based on its greenhouse gas emissions against a measure of its level
of economic activity. From Nicole’s report, it has shown that the carbon intensity has been reduced from 0.07168 in 2005
to 0.06839 in 2006 and to 0.006632 in 2007 respectively. In the first three months of 2008, the emissions levels had
reduced by 9.4% compared with figures in 2005.
Mr Lyndon Discombe, Prince Hotel & Residence Kuala Lumpur’s General Manager, commented, “We are pleased with the levels
of emissions reduction as a result of this programme. By utilising McKinnon & Clarke’s environmental expertise, we have
achieved our reduction levels effectively and systematically. We look forward to a continued good working relationship
with McKinnon & Clarke who will continue to assist us in reducing our carbon emissions in the future.”
